There is no place like The Earth

Introduction
In this unit- Amazing Space- for year 1, my pupils will talk about that we live in a planet called The Earth and they will learn about the necessity to look after our planet. They will understand what we see in the sky and learn some essential characteristics of the Sun and the Moon. This unit is linked with our mini project in the school about “The Earth Day”. Moreover, they will understand that the Earth moves around the Sun and that the Moon moves around the Earth. They will talk about the seasons and will understand why we have day and night. Finally, they will consider how our activities are different depending on the time of day.

Previous Knowledge
Some of the terms that my pupils already know are: sun, moon, day, night, stars, circle, recycle, astronauts, satellite.

How can we activate my pupils’ Knowledge?
In this case I am going to use cartoons because I think that it is a vey enjoyable way to engage my pupils in the knowledge of new vocabulary, sentences and structures.

This video shows us Charlie & Lola. They are a couple of siblings that give us the opportunity to reflect in different topics. The video that I have chosen to activate my pupils’ knowledge and learning new vocabulary is based on the book Look after your planetby Lauren Child, (2008). I have got both versions, in digital and paper format just in case our computer doesn’t work.

The summary of the book and the video is the following: Lola is throwing everything away because she does not want her bedroom to ever get as messy and pongy as Marv’s older brother Marty’s bedroom. Charlie tries to convince her to recycle things. Charlie explains to Lola what recycle is and why it is so important. Eventually, they decided to participate in a competition and involved its school. They have got a tree counter and they need to cover all of it to get a real one tree.

How can we connect the topic with the video?
After watching the video I am going to ask them some questions in order to activate the previous knowledge and the new knowledge.

Never not ever
When Lola sneak into Marty’s bedroom and she said: “Ohh, It’s pongy”, “I do not ever, never want my room to look like  Marty’s
  • What does Lola said?
  • Why does Lola started to recycle?

Recycle time
  • Why do you think Charlie wants Lola to recycle everything? Why is important to recycle and help our planet?
  • Do you know the name of our planet?
  • What happens at the end of the story?
  • What would you miss if it were night all time or day all the time?
  • How can you help to look after our planet?
Answers examples: switch off the lights, turn off the tap while I brush my teeth, turn off the TV or computer…

With this discussion we carry on with one of the most important aims of this unit. Look after our planet and know that we live in a planet called it the Earth and it is belong to a solar system.

Play time
This activity helps our pupils to practice what they have learnt

Finally, I would like to comment that it is important not to say our pupils the title of the unit. For me, it is like a magic moment in which our pupils feel nervous and excited to see what is happening.
